What Are Some Key Areas You Should Monitor To Prevent Water Damage In Your Hermitage/Donelson Business?

1/15/2024 (Permalink)

Avoiding damage and disasters is one of the ways you protect your business. Restoration from these events will take time away from what you do and is costly. Depending on the damage you sustain, you may lose business, too!

No business owner wants to experience these types of consequences, so preventing them from occurring is the intelligent thing to do. Monitoring the most vulnerable spots should be your top priority.

Below, we list some spots to keep an eye on to prevent water damage at your Hermitage/Donelson commercial location.

Which Areas Of My Business Are Most Vulnerable To Damage From Water?

A flood at your business can damage flooring, machinery, furniture, electronics, and more, so watching the areas most likely to spring a leak will help you avoid disasters. The most vulnerable areas of your business when it comes to creating water damage often are:

  • Plumbing and pipes. Monitor bathrooms, sinks, and fixtures for signs of corrosion or drips - no matter how small. Replace fittings and other parts immediately.
  • Appliances. Appliances and machines that use water need to be maintained regularly to ensure that a leak doesn't develop. A small leak can turn into a big problem in no time!
  • Drainage. Drainage around your building, from your roof, and in your parking areas must be kept free of debris and obstructions, especially during wet weather. Standing water will corrode many metals and wood and can be unhealthy if stagnated

What Do I Do About Water Damage In My Basement?

9/14/2023 (Permalink)

A flood or leak in the basement of your Hermitage/Donelson home or business can create many problems since basements are often where essential items are stored.

Books, photo items, machinery, appliances, and textiles can be entirely ruined by this type of disaster - no matter the size. Still, a professional restoration company like our team at SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson gas the training, equipment, and products needed to recover many of these items.

We can be at your location immediately to start the restoration if you experience water damage in your basement.

What Should I Do First When I Discover Water Damage?

Here are the first steps you should take when you discover that your basement has experienced damage from flooding or leaks:

  • Call SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson at (615) 242 9391 or contact us online!
  • While you’re waiting for our team to arrive, put safety first. Call your power company and electrician so that the appropriate steps are taken to manage the dangerous combination of water and electricity in this situation. These professionals have the tools and training to handle it all safely. They will be able to determine the steps you can take in beginning your cleanup process without increasing the risk of fire damage from any dangerous scenarios, such as exposed wires and more.
  • A shop vac can clean up smaller amounts of standing water, and using a dehumidifier or fans circulates needed air and lessen the humidity. Your air conditioning can also be a big help since circulated air discourages mold growth, so it should stay running throughout the building as long as that can be done safely. You will want a professional opinion before using window air conditioning units.
  • If valuable documents and papers become water-logged, preserve them by placing them in the freezer; this may stop the growth of mildew or deterioration, but remember that SERVPRO is fully equipped to recover documents affected by a disaster.

How Do You Prevent Flooding At Your Hermitage/Donelson Home?

4/18/2023 (Permalink)

Tennessee is known for its thunderstorms and tornadoes during the Spring and Summer, so many homes in the Hermitage/Donelson area may face the risk of flooding at some point. Preparing your home for the possibility of a flood makes sense. Keep reading for some helpful information!

How Can You Prepare Your Hermitage/Donelson Location For Possible Flooding?

Here are some tips on ways to be a step ahead of a flood:

  • Know Your Risk. Homeowners and renters can gauge their current flood risk by visiting Floodsmart.gov. This federal program sets flood insurance rates using FEMA's Flood Insurance Rate Maps, which show a community's base flood elevations, flood zones, and floodplain boundaries. Any home within a so-called 100-year floodplain, an area with a 1 percent chance of flooding in any given year, is deemed at risk.
  • If you live within a 100-year floodplain, flood insurance is a must. Anyone with a federally backed mortgage who lives in a flood zone must carry insurance. People in high-risk areas often assume government-issued disaster assistance will cover flood damage costs. However, emergency funds are seldom adequate, and standard insurance policies usually won't cover water damage caused by extreme weather.
  • Porous outdoor surfaces help water seep into the ground instead of streaming toward your home. Digging depressions - swales - to channel stormwater runoff away from your house, converting concrete or asphalt driveways to gravel or brick, and using absorbent mulch can help manage heavy rain and reduce potential flood damage. You can also place a rain barrel beneath a gutter downspout to allay basement flooding and minimize further flooding and pollution of local waterways.

Can SERVPRO Help You Prevent Flooding At Your Hermitage/Donelson Location?

Yes, we can! So far, we've only talked about weather-related flooding, but you can also experience a flood caused by equipment failures or broken pipes. We can come and inspect your home and property to identify vulnerabilities, and then we can complete the necessary repairs!

If a flood occurs, you can count on us to get you back to normal. We are restoration specialists, and we handle all types of issues caused by flooding:

2/13/2023 (Permalink)

What Are Some Proactive Steps I Can Take If My Hermitage/Donelson Home Experiences Water Damage?

  • Determine the severity of the damage. Is your whole basement flooded, or just a tiny puddle from a malfunctioning appliance? Is your ceiling or roof affected? Do you detect any moldy odors or see any evidence of an infestation? All of these questions are important ones to answer!
  • Shut off your water main as soon as possible after discovering water damage if it seems to be coming from a source inside your home, such as your sink, a leak, a pipe burst, or more. What Are Some Flood Damage Prevention Tips For Your Nashville Business?

1/9/2023 (Permalink)

Damage from flooding can cause severe issues to your Nashville business location. It can weaken the foundation of your business, cause structural damage, or create the conditions needed for a mold infestation.

To avoid flood damage, consider how a flood may occur at your location and plan accordingly. Do you live near a creek or river? Does your property drain well? Is your building older, with plumbing that may need to be updated? The answers to these and other flood-related questions will help you determine the flood-prevention steps you need to take.

What Are Some Top Tips For Flood Damage Prevention?

The sources of a flood can be natural or manmade. Here are some top tips to help you avoid the damage that a flood of any kind can cause to your Nashville business location:

  • Check for any leaks within or around your business, whether pipes or appliances and repair them immediately. Take care of the source if you see drips or any dark spots under pipes. It is essential to identify any leaks before they develop into serious issues.
  • Keep pipes insulated and have the internal temperature of the building regulated to prevent the pipes from freezing. Frozen pipes can crack and lead to leakage and flooding.
  • At least once a year, you should inspect your roof for leaks or missing shingles. Damaged shingles also need to be replaced; repair any cracked caulking immediately. Snow buildup can cause structural damage and weaken your roof, clean your roof when there is snow or ice buildup to prevent this.
  • If you live near a creek or river, have your property surveyed for any vulnerable areas and take the necessary steps to protect them against rising floodwaters.
  • If severe flooding occurs, evacuate everyone from the building as quickly and safely as possible to higher ground and call the necessary authorities.

What Are The Steps I Should Take To Prevent Water Damage In My Hermitage/Donelson Home?

11/14/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO men walking towards a home One of the best ways to protect your Hermitage/Donelson location from water damage is to be prepared in advance.

It isn’t uncommon to experience heavy rainfall, high winds, and more during autumn in Middle Tennessee. The damage to your Hermitage/Donelson home due to floodwaters or heavy rain can be significant.

From weakening a structure - such as columns, walls, fencing, steps, etc. - to allowing the perfect environment for a mold infestation to appear, a flooding event can lead to severe consequences, no matter how much water is involved.

One of the best ways to protect your Hermitage/Donelson location from water damage is to be prepared in advance. Keep reading for tips on some ways to prevent water damage!

What Are Some Prevention Tips That Will Keep My Hermitage/Donelson Home Safe From Water Damage?

Some best practices for water damage prevention to your home are:

  • Maintaining your home's condition will help keep it safe from water damage. Check for areas that come in contact with rain and wind, such as roofing, and be sure to complete necessary repairs right away. Windows and doors need to be kept in good condition and sealed well in advance of wet weather.
  • If you live in an area near a river or creek or have drainage ditches on your property, you will want to take the necessary precautions to ensure that rising waters won’t get near your property. Ensure drainage ditches are clear of debris so water can run freely away from your property. Some of these concerns will need to be handled by city or county authorities, so find out who your contact people are and reach out to them for tips and pointers.
  • While checking your roof, you should also pay close attention to the gutters. It’s hard to overstate the value of gutters in protecting your home. Pull leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts. Reattach gutters that have pulled away from the house, and run a hose on the roof to check for proper drainage. If leaks exist, dry the area and use caulking or epoxy to seal the leak.
  • To prevent non-weather-related water damage, keeping your pipes and fittings in good condition will help you here. Inspect these and your appliances regularly to look for leaks and drips. Replace any items that show signs of leakage so that you don’t have a much bigger problem later on.

Can SERVPRO Help Me Repair My Leaky Old Roof?

9/26/2022 (Permalink)

Roof shingles Can SERVPRO Help Me Repair My Leaky Old Roof?

Can SERVPRO Help Me Repair My Leaky Old Roof?

Your roof is one of the most critical parts of your Hermitage/Donelson home or business. It protects you and your belongings from wet weather, falling branches, flying debris, heat, and sun. You will want to take protective steps to ensure that the roof of your Nashville home stays in tip-top shape, even when it’s old.

What Are The Most Important Steps To Maintain My Leaky Older Roof?

  • Maintenance. The number one way to prevent damage to your roof and home is to perform regular maintenance. Replace loose and missing shingles right away. It would help if you routinely caulked around pipes and vents. Exposed metal will rust and deteriorate, so ensure those areas get painted or treated before this occurs. A damaged roof can quickly become a huge issue, allowing water to intrude into every part of your home or business and cause water damage. Inspecting your roof before and after bad weather will help you maintain its condition.
  • Trees and shrubs. Vegetation that overhangs your building should be trimmed back periodically, especially if some seem weak or have become a nuisance. Falling branches can damage a roof during inclement weather. If a tree or large shrub seems unstable, it might be time to have it completely removed for future safety concerns.
  • Gutters. Remove leaves, dirt, and debris from your gutters to avoid water damage from backed-up rain. Rain spouts can pull away from the building if they are overloaded or clogged with water and waste, damaging the corners of the roof and exterior walls. Prevention is always a good idea and can save you time and trouble.

What Do I Do If My Hermitage/Donelson Roof Becomes Damaged?

If you have experienced significant damage to your older roof, it may start to leak. Here are some ways that a professional restoration company can help you recover:

  • Professional Help. Call a professional restoration company like SERVPRO if you see curled or buckled shingles during your maintenance inspections. If shingles are missing, replace them right away to avoid leaks and future water damage. Water stains in the attic are a tell-tale sign that you might need a new roof; higher-than-average energy bills often tell the same story.
  • Unpleasant Odors. When leaks and flooding happen due to a leaky roof, you can end up with unpleasant odors that can be difficult to eradicate. We excel at odor removal and deodorization!
  • Structural Assessment. SERVPRO can come to your Hermitage/Donelson home or business and assess any damage that may have occurred. We’ll advise you on your next steps if any damage is found and help you return to normal immediately.

Anytime your Nashville home or business experiences a disaster, large or small, SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson can be onsite immediately to help you recover quickly. Our technicians are highly trained, and we offer 24-hour service

How Can I Find The Source Of Water Damage In My Hermitage/Donelson Home?

6/13/2022 (Permalink)

Cracking and peeling paint, warped wood, or that telltale mildew smell are all signs of a water leak somewhere in your home. You must find the source of that leak now that water damage is occurring, but where do you start?

Remember, water flows downward, so the source of the leak is often not going to be in the exact location as the signs you find. Signs and symptoms may not take you directly to the source of the leak, but they will give you a good indication that you are in the right area.

Where Should I Start When Searching For A Water Leak In My Hermitage/Donelson House?

Some tips for you to use in searching for water damage sources:

  • If you think your leak is coming from either the kitchen or bathroom, start your investigation by opening the cabinet doors under the sink. Look for any signs of moisture at the joints in the pipes. Remove everything from the base of the cabinet and look for water stains, dampness, corrosion on pipes, mold or mildew, and buckled or peeling material. All of these are a good indication of a water leak.
  • You will have to expend more effort to determine the source of leaks from your ceiling, floor, or walls. Start by examining the flooring around fixtures and appliances that use water, such as toilets, bathtubs, dishwashers, and refrigerators. Reasonable indications to watch for include cracked or warped flooring and spongy spots on the floor.
  • Be sure to carefully examine the walls and ceilings of rooms located directly beneath bathrooms and kitchens. Any stains on the ceiling or walls or bubbling or peeling paint indicate moisture where there it shouldn’t be. Before ripping your walls and ceilings apart to find the leak, have a professional restoration company like SERVPRO verify the location.

What Are The Steps I Should Take When I Find A Water Leak In My Hermitage/Donelson Home?

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Water leaks happen from time to time in every home. These leaks can become more significant if they are not handled correctly, so time is of the essence when it comes to fixing them! A water leak can be stressful and overwhelming to deal with, especially if you have no experience in doing so.

Here’s what to do after a water leak in your house and how taking the right action at the right time can help you manage.

What Are The First Three Steps In Managing A Water Leak At My Nashville Location?

Let’s talk about the very first things you should do.

  • Find the water valve in your basement and turn the knob clockwise to shut the water off. If you don’t know how to turn the water off, call someone who does know right away. The longer your water runs, the more likely your home will suffer damage. Be careful when turning the water valve, too. It could break if you turn it too hard, which means you won’t be able to turn off the water at all.
  • As a precaution, shut off the electricity in your house until the damage has been assessed. It might look like the leak only impacts a particular spot in your home, but you never know where that leak may have spread unseen. It could start a fire if the water drips into your electric line. To prevent this from happening, shut off your electricity right after shutting off the water. Locate your circuit breaker and flip the switch or pull out the fuse box to shut off power to your entire house.
  • The most crucial step after discovering a water leak in your house is to identify the source of that leak. Look for signs of water damage in every room, especially the bathroom or kitchen. Examine the floor and walls for dark or wet spots, cracking, bubbling, and puddles of water, and be alert for unpleasant odors.

Now that you have found the source of the leak and have taken steps to ensure your home is safe call a professional water damage restoration company like SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson!

What Can You Do When Your Basement Floods?

3/28/2022 (Permalink)

The basement is the place in most homes where essential items are stored. In most cases, it’s one of the best places to keep things since it’s quiet and out of the way. However, if a flood occurs, that water becomes a serious threat to all your possessions. Books, photos, and textiles stored in your Hermitage/Donelson basement can end up completely ruined if they are soaked.

Structural issues and damage to walls and ceilings can also result from a flood in your basement.

If this happens, you may not know what to do. Keep in mind that a professional restoration company like our team here at SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson has all the training and technology needed to recover these kinds of items and get your premises dry.

What Should I Do First If My Hermitage/Donelson Basement Experiences Flooding?

  • After any water damage situation, your primary focus should be safety first:
    • Is it safe to stay in the house? Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are the most prevalent concerns.
    • Call your power company, electrician, and your professional water damage cleanup team immediately so that they can take steps to manage the dangerous combination of water and electricity in this situation. These professionals will determine the steps you can take in beginning your cleanup process without increasing the risk of injury from exposed wires, etc.
  • While you wait for SERVPRO to arrive, there are some cleanup tasks you can do once you determine that it’s safe to do so:
    • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
    • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
    • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
    • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
    • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
    • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
    • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
    • Gather loose items from floors.
  • Pro Tip: To discourage mold and mildew from establishing a colony on damp surfaces, scrub them with a solution of one cup bleach to one gallon of water - be sure to wear gloves and protective eyewear. Make sure you keep the space you are in well ventilated while you are doing tasks that involve cleaning solutions. SERVPRO can advise you here since we are mold remediation specialists.

What Are Some Things I Should Not Do After A Flooding Event?

Here are some tips to help you avoid further damage to your property after your basement floods:

  • Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
  • Don't leave books, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  • Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Don't use television or other household appliances.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet, and stay out of rooms where ceilings are sagging or any other structural issues are observed.

Here at SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson, we are always prepared to help whenever you are dealing with damage from water or fire. We handle large cleanup projects for commercial business owners and smaller projects for Hermitage/Donelson area homeowners, and we can get your premises Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, too.

How Do I Check My Hermitage Property For Water Damage?

2/14/2022 (Permalink)

Doing regular inspections of areas in your Hermitage home or business that are most likely to develop water damage will allow you to take care of issues before they can become serious. Damp areas in any building will attract a mold infestation, structural issues, and unsightly conditions.

What Are The Top Three Areas I Need To Investigate For Water Damage?

  • The bathroom. Most bathrooms are cleaned thoroughly at least once a week, and these times are great for checking for leaks and damp areas. Look in the least traveled spots, such as behind the toilet and under the sink. If there are any leaks in these places, they will need to be fully dried after finding the source and have that repaired first.
  • The kitchen. This area of the home is used more than any other area in homes besides the bath, and if you have a staff kitchen in your business, that will be just as true. Keep an eye out for spills and leaks and clean them up immediately to ensure that they are not attracting mold spores, which are always in our air. Under the sink and refrigerator are places that can be damaged by water without you noticing, so get out your flashlight and make sure you see every corner clearly.
  • The laundry room. This room, with its large appliances, also has nooks and crannies that are not cleaned as often, and a leak behind the washing machine can create huge issues down the road. Add to that the humidity in the air and you have a recipe for the establishment of a mold colony, buckling floorboards, peeling walls, and more. Enlist help, pull the washer and dryer out from the wall regularly, and make sure the areas behind them are clean, dry, and disinfected.

Other areas to keep an eye on: hall closets, your garage, and/or basement.

What Are Three Telltale Signs Of Water Damage In My Hermitage Home Or Business?

There are a few telltale signs that will let you know right away that you have a water damage issue.

  • One of the most obvious signs to watch for is a visible leak with dripping water. It could also appear as a watermark, where the paint is darker than the surrounding area. Flaking, bubbling, or cracking paint are also signs that you may need to schedule water damage restoration, as is visible mold, which can be light green to dark black in color.
  • You might smell the signs of water damage long before it becomes visible due to an accompanying mold infestation. Mold has a strong, musty odor which can also irritate sensitive populations, including people with asthma and allergies.
  • A spike in your water usage is another way to know that you have a leak somewhere. If your bill is suddenly much higher without an obvious explanation, start inspecting areas of your home for wet spots, a damp smell, or sounds of running water.

What Should You Know About Entering Your Nashville Home After A Flood?

11/28/2021 (Permalink)

When returning to your Hermitage/Donelson home after it’s been flooded, you need to be aware that your house may be contaminated with mold or sewage. Taking precautions before you check out the damage will keep you safe. Don’t forget that you can engage the services of a professional restoration company like SERVPRO to help you here.

What Are Some Steps You Should Do First When Going Into Your Hermitage/Donelson Home After Flooding?

Any assessment should be done during daylight hours if at all possible. If you must go in while it’s dark, make sure any lighting you carry does not need to be plugged in.

  • The main power needs to be turned off first. If you must enter standing water to access the main power switch, call an electrician to turn it off. Never turn the power on or off or use an electric tool or appliance while standing in water. An electrician needs to check the house’s electrical system before turning the power on again.
  • If you smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the main gas valve, open all windows, and leave your house immediately. Notify the gas company or the police or fire departments, or State Fire Marshal’s office. Turning on the lights could cause a spark. Stay away until you know it is safe to return.
  • If your home has been flooded and closed up for several days, assume your home has mold. Your home also may be contaminated with sewage after a flooding event.

What Are Some Ways You Can Prevent Unsafe Conditions In Your Home After A Flood?

  • Throw away food that may have come in contact with floodwater, perishable foods that have not been refrigerated properly due to power outages, and any foodstuffs with an unusual odor, color, or texture. Unsafe food can make you sick even if it looks, smells, and tastes normal. When in doubt, throw it out.
  • Do not use water you suspect is contaminated to wash dishes, brush your teeth, wash and prepare food, wash your hands, make ice, or make baby formula. Safe water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene will be bottled, boiled, or treated.
  • If flood or stormwater has entered your home, dry it out as soon as possible to prevent a mold colony from getting started. Follow these steps:
    • If you have electricity and an electrician has determined that it’s safe to turn it on, use a “wet-dry” shop vacuum, an electric-powered water transfer pump, or a sump pump to remove the standing water. If you are operating equipment in wet areas, be sure to wear rubber boots.
    • If weather permits, open windows and doors of the house to aid in the drying-out process.
    • Use fans and dehumidifiers to remove excess moisture. Place fans at a window or door to blow the air outwards rather than inward, so mold spores are not spread inside.

When the worst happens, SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson is here to help. We are highly trained and well equipped to handle water damage, mold remediation, odor removal, and much more.

We can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, too.

What Are Water Damage Categories?

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage to your Hermitage home or business can be the result of many different situations. Storms, burst pipes, fire fighting efforts, or any other number of sources could cause this. There are different classifications of water damage. Some water damage scenarios are small and manageable, while others can be disastrous! Our SERVPRO team is well-equipped to handle water damage events of all classifications. We can be onsite right away to start your water damage restoration process.

What Are The Elements Of Each Water Damage Category?

The 4 Primary Classifications of Water Damage:

  • Class 1 involves the least amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. It affects only part of the material that has absorbed minimal moisture. Little or no wet carpet or cushion is present.
  • Class 2 involves a more significant amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. It affects at least an entire room of carpet and cushion (pad). Water has wicked up walls less than 24 inches. There is moisture remaining in structural materials and substructure soil.
  • Class 3 involves much more significant amounts of water, absorption, and evaporation. This includes saturated ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushion, and subfloor.
  • Class 4 relates to specialty drying. For example, situations involving wet materials with very low permeance/porosity. This includes hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, lightweight concrete, and stone. Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which require very low specific humidity. These types of losses may need longer drying times and unique methods.

We work closely with corporate to make sure everything possible is done to preserve your paper assets.

Can My Hose Cause Damage To My House In Hermitage/Donelson

7/12/2021 (Permalink)

A damaged hose will not only waste water and make outdoor chores more troublesome, but it can cause water damage to your home, as well. Unfortunately, you will often have no idea that there’s a problem until you find excess water around your foundation near the faucet or when the neighbor complains that you are flooding his or her yard!

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS THAT MY HOSE CAN HARM MY HOME?

Water damage to your home can occur any time water is allowed to run unchecked, and a faulty garden hose is a common culprit here. Damage could include:

  • erosion around walkways and driveways causing the concrete to crack or surfaces to collapse
  • standing water to pool around foundations which can leak into low-lying parts of the home
  • soaked ground conditions in your yard could attract insects and wildlife that may move indoors and infest your house
  • wet earth around large trees can cause them to fall, and they could end up on your roof or fencing
  • wet conditions around your foundations can seep into your walls, leaving you with structural issues and possible mold infestations

HOW CAN I PROTECT MY HERMITAGE/DONELSON HOME FROM WATER DAMAGE FROM MY GARDEN HOSE?

You can take some do-it-yourself Garden Hose Repair: 4 Tips To Repair a Leaking Garden Hose (bobvila.com) to repair your hose if it leaks and creates issues. Here are some helpful hints:

  • Pinholes are often only visible when you turn on your faucet and see small streams of water from punctured parts of the hose. You can use electrical tape to seal these tiny holes since it has the elasticity and weather resistance needed to be effective out-of-doors.
  • Bigger tears in a hose can happen over time, and these will crack with exposure to extreme heat or cold. A hose mender - a short plastic or metal tube used to replace the damaged section - can be just the perfect fix here.
  • A leak in your hose coupling is another cause of water damage. If you spot a steady drip coming from the hose coupling when you connect it to a source, the gasket may need to be replaced.
  • You may notice that the coupling has been bent while you are replacing your gasket, so now is the time to replace that coupling, as well. A bent collar loses the watertight seal between the hose and a spigot, nozzle, or sprinkler, causing a leak.

WHO CAN I TRUST TO REPAIR WATER DAMAGE TO MY HERMITAGE/DONELSON HOME?

There’s nothing worse than water damage for a homeowner. It can often occur with little-to-no warning, leaving the homeowner completely unaware that there is an issue; the damage from this kind of event can be significant. From weakening a structure - such as columns, walls, fencing, steps, etc. - to creating the optimal environment for a mold invasion, a flooding event can lead to serious consequences, no matter how much water is involved.

One of the best ways to protect your home from water damage is to be prepared in advance. Preparation can involve:

MAINTENANCE:

Maintaining the condition of your home is smart, both financially and with regards to safety, so make sure you keep your eye on the areas involving water. Windows and doors need to be kept in good condition, sealed well in advance of wet weather. Also, we all know what will happen if the pipes under your kitchen sink don’t get regular care and burst!

FLOODING

If you live in an area that is near a river or creek, or if you have drainage ditches on your property, you will want to take the necessary precautions to ensure that rising waters of any kind won’t get near your property. Some of these concerns will need to be handled by city or county authorities, so take a moment to find out who your contact people are, and reach out to them for tips and pointers.

SPILLS

If you have a spill or accident in your home, such as an overflowing dishwasher, that can be a huge issue when it comes to the clean-up. If the water is not managed properly and quickly, warped floorboards, baseboards, and carpeting can be the result. Take the steps you can to clean up standing water, and then give your friends here at SERVPRO a call!

SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson can be onsite to help with any emergency you have experienced right away. We handle fire damage, water damage, mold invasions, biohazards, and more. We can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, too! This franchise is independently owned and operated.

First Steps In Recovering After Water Damage

3/29/2021 (Permalink)

You will often have no idea that water damage has occurred. It can be due to a natural event, such as an overflowing creek or river, or maybe just a big spill. Other times it can be because an appliance or piping has sprung a leak. Some areas of your home or business are more likely to experience water damage than others; rooms with sinks, as in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry areas are always at risk, while low-lying areas such as basements and cellars are places that will be more likely to see water damage.

RECOVERY

Here are first steps you can take in recovering from water damage:

  • Turn off all water sources immediately and soak up standing water using mops, or towels, blankets, and rags; you can use a ShopVac here if necessary. Get ceiling or oscillating floor fans started to dry the affected areas as soon as possible, and in all cases make sure tools and machinery away from standing water before you plug them in
  • Remove and prop up all wet upholstery and cushions so that they can dry, and protect carpeting by placing wooden blocks or aluminum foil under furniture legs
  • During the summer, turn your air conditioning on for additional drying
  • Hang furs and leather goods and don’t leave wet fabrics lying on wet surfaces
  • Remove books and magazines from wet carpets or floors so that colored inks don’t leave marks

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

  • Refrain from using household appliances and ceiling fixtures while surfaces are wet
  • Avoid rooms with sagging ceilings or warped flooring; inspect areas that have experienced large amounts of water to ensure there is no severe structural damage
  • Wet materials are often extremely heavy; avoid moving anything that is difficult
  • Never wade into water when you don’t know how deep it is or if you aren’t sure whether it is contaminated

When you experience a water damage event, keep us in mind. Our team here SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson has all the experience and expertise that you’ll need to manage this kind of event. We are also experts when it comes to fire damage and mold remediation, and we can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, too. This franchise is independently owned and operated.

Steps To Take After Finding A Leaking Appliance

2/15/2021 (Permalink)

Appliances can spring leaks and easily go unnoticed for some length of time, and your flooring, cabinetry, and other belongings can be negatively affected. If the leak has been developing slowly over time and releasing small amounts of water that ends up soaking into the materials below, the damage can actually be significant.

Protect Your Flooring

The first step you will want to take after finding a leaking appliance is to protect your flooring and any items around the leak so that no further damage is done. If the leak has become serious and you have standing water to deal with, a shop-vac can be used in removing as much of that water as possible, and you can put absorbent materials in place to help this process.  Professionals in your area can be contacted to come in to help if you find that you have a situation that’s too big for you to handle alone.

Turn Off The Water Source

If the leak is significant, turn off any source of water to the appliance right away. Call your appliance repair person and have them come to take a look at the machine; be sure to check your warranty to see if it is covered so that you can be prepared for the financial cost to you. It may be time for a new appliance, and your professionals will be able to give you the right recommendation.

Assess Affected Areas

Assess the affected areas around the leak. If there has been a large amount of water standing for any period of time you may have some damage to flooring, walls, or personal belongings. Your SERVPRO cleanup and repair professionals can be onsite in no time to get your home or business back to normal.

Document Recovery

Documents and other paper items may have been affected, so make sure you talk to a professional restoration company that specializes in document recovery and restoration; they will have the equipment and training to be able to save these items if at all possible.

SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson is ready and waiting to help you 24 hours a day and 7 days a week with all your water damage and fire damage issues, and we handle document restoration, too. What To Do If You Find A Water Leak In Your Attic

12/29/2020 (Permalink)

If you experience a leak in your attic springs a leak, that can easily become an issue for other areas of your building. When water damage has occurred in your attic area, you will want to take immediate action to avoid both the damage and the associated higher costs and stress.

Here are some ideas about what to do if you find a water leak in your attic:

  • Location. You’ll first need to determine where the leak is coming from, either from a roofing issue or pipeline break. Make sure you are thorough in your assessment and be sure to take safety precautions. Stay away from light sockets, recessed lights, and other electrical systems until the electricity to the attic area has been turned off. Get an accurate idea of how widespread the damage is.
  • Source. Find the source of the water issues and eliminate them before handling any of the damage. Contact your homeowner’s insurance carrier at this point if it looks like repair costs will extend beyond your deductible and if you think you need the help of professionals. The carrier may decline to cover any damage if you attempt to complete repairs yourself.
  • Repairs. There are some common repairs you can expect after your attic experiences water damage, such as:
    • Structural. This can include anything from basic framework to floorboards. This process can be time-consuming since materials need to be checked carefully to ensure that they are in good condition.
    • Plumbing. If the source of your attic water damage was a plumbing issue, you will have to replace pipes or components that led to the event. If the main cause was pipes freezing and bursting, the next step will be to installing proper insulation.
    • Electrical. Lighting, light sockets, and electrical outlets may have been negatively affected by a water damage event. Unless you are an electrical professional you need to avoid any repair attempts here, so be prepared to contact a reputable company to take care of this part of your repair project.
    • Insulation. If your insulation was affected when your attic was damaged, you will want to consider replacing or upgrading your attic insulation.
    • Recovery. The last step in the process of dealing with water damage in your attic will be the final recovery and cleaning. Get rid of remaining items and residue and wipe down surfaces with a bleach and water solution, and be sure to take steps to protect yourself with proper Personal Protective Equipment.

The team here at SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson is always available to restore and repair your home or business if you experience damage from leaks. We are water damage and fire damage experts, and we handle mold prevention and remediation, too. We can also get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned - ask us how.

What To Do After A Pipe Bursts In Your Business

11/10/2020 (Permalink)

If a pipe bursts in your business, you will need to handle the issue quickly so that your premises and equipment don’t get destroyed due to any flooding. A burst pipe in your business can be extremely costly if not handled correctly and efficiently, so taking the appropriate steps will be vital to making sure your investment is protected.

  • Call the professionals. They will arrive right away to assess the damage and to assess the parts of the structure that may have been affected to make sure the premises are safe.
  • Turn off any water that is going to the affected area; you should open the faucets that are below the pipe burst so that pressure can be alleviated. This step will help to prevent further issues.
  • Begin to soak up any standing water as long as it can be done safely; keep in mind that  “black (sewer/contaminated) water” should be completely avoided and left for the professionals to handle. Standing water can lead to mold damage and continued damage to flooring and walls.
  • Open all doors and windows to begin the drying process by circulating airflow. Once the professionals arrive with their industrial-grade equipment, they will be able to complete the process.
  • Ensure that electricity is turned off in the affected areas to prevent shocking anyone, and have everyone leave any areas that are affected. Water can easily run into electrical circuits and create a serious situation.
  • Contact your insurance company to let them know what has happened, and make sure to take pictures of the damage as soon as you can after the event. Your professional water damage remediation company will work with your insurance company to make sure that everything goes smoothly and that you and the tenants of your high-rise tower can get back to work as soon as possible.

The SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson team is here to help you if you experience water damage in your home or business. What To Do In Case of A Major Water Leak In Your Home

9/24/2020 (Permalink)

A major water leak can cause a lot of water damage to any home, and we know you will want to do everything possible to prevent as much damage to your living spaces and your belongings as you can. Our team SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson has some helpful tips for you if you experience a major water leak.

The first step is to find where that leak originated, so you will need to inspect your home for the source.

If the leak is an interior one, you may see a lot of water but its source may not be readily apparent. Check the areas around your tubs, sinks, shower doors, toilets, and other appliances that involve water to see where the fault is. You may find the issue under a sink if you have a burst pipe. Inspect all drywall for water damage, looking for buckling, discoloration, and warping; this will tell you if your major water leak is inside your walls. Pay attention to any unpleasant odors; this can mean that you will also need to have a mold infestation handled.

If your water leak is due to a serious structural issue, either before or following heavy weather, you will want to talk to construction experts right away to start renovation or repair work. More wet weather is on the way with the approach of Fall and Winter, so there isn’t much time to waste here. Having a faulty roof or gutter system taken care of ahead of bad weather is a really good choice for the smart homeowner.

Some issues that you find may be things you can take care of yourself, but if you find that you are faced with something beyond your capabilities, don’t hesitate to reach out to an experienced and skilled professional.

Whether your water damage is minor or major, the team here at SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson is always ready and happy to help. We handle fire damage, water damage, and restoration projects of all sizes. We’re experts in the areas of mold prevention and remediation, as well. We can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned!

What To Do When Your Basement Floods

8/14/2020 (Permalink)

A basement flood can create a lot of problems for a homeowner. Since the basement is often used for storage, items such as books, photos, electronics, and textiles can be adversely affected if they become water-logged. Often, the items themselves can become so damaged that they are beyond repair. Your friends at SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson have some tips that can help save you from this situation.

Act quickly if you find that your basement is being flooded, but make sure anyone who is involved is being safe. If you have a large amount of standing water in your basement, call your power company, electrician, and/or your professional water damage cleanup team immediately. These professionals have the tools and training to handle the situation properly and will be able to determine the best, and safest, steps to take in beginning the cleanup process without increasing the risk of fire damage from any dangerous scenarios, such as exposed wires, etc.

There are some steps you can take safely, though. A shop-vac can clean up smaller amounts of standing water, and using a dehumidifier or fans will circulate air; this discourages mold growth and mildew. Make sure to keep these machines at least 8 inches away from walls to allow for the best circulation possible. Your air conditioning can be a big help here, too, so it should stay running throughout the building. Make sure no one turns on a window air conditioning unit in the basement while there are damp conditions, however.

To discourage mold from taking advantage of damp surfaces, you can scrub them with a solution of one cup bleach to one gallon of water while wearing gloves and protective eyewear. Remember to keep the room ventilated while you are doing tasks that involve cleaning solutions.

You can actually save valuable documents and papers by placing them in the freezer if they have been soaked. This may stop the growth of mildew or deterioration.

Storing important items in your basement may not be a best practice, but if you don’t have space anywhere else, you may want to try using air- and water-tight plastic bins to protect your items against a flooding event.

Here at SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson, we are always ready to help whenever you are dealing with water damage and fire damage, and we are mold remediation specialists, too. We handle large cleanup projects for commercial business owners and smaller projects for area homeowners, and we can get your premises Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned!

Restoring Your Furniture After Water Damage

6/1/2020 (Permalink)

If you have some furniture that has experienced water damage, the damage can often be manageable and you can handle it by following some simple DIY steps. If you have some furniture that needs care after flooding or weather-related water damage, here are some tips you can follow to restore your furniture and carpeting, and always remember that the SERVPRO team is ready to assist you with the jobs that require professional expertise.

Wood Care. When a piece of furniture made from wood has been soaked in water, the first step you will need to take is to let it dry completely. Place it in a room that is warm and that enjoys good circulation; you can decide to turn on the heat and fans, as well, and that can be helpful. If the outdoor temperatures are warm, place the furniture outside, but take care that the temperature is truly warm enough - cool weather will cause the piece to dry more slowly and mold or mildew may appear. Weather that is TOO warm won’t be much help, either; air that is too hot will cause cracks to form in the furniture.

White Spots. If you find white spots on the furniture, mix a solution of toothpaste and baking soda in equal parts. After dipping a wet cloth in this solution, rub it around and on the spots and polish the area with a dry piece of fabric made from cotton. Helpful Tip: This method can be used to remove water rings from drinking glasses, as well.

Black Spots. Black spots indicate that water has seeped through the finish into the wood itself, and that leads to mildew. If you see this issue developing, it will require you to remove the finish, clean the mildew with a bleach solution, and put on a new layer of finish to bring your furniture back to its original beauty.

Veneer. The veneer on your furniture may have buckled or warped through contact with water. You can soak the veneer with a moisturizer to cause it to lie down flat and then wipe it clean and dry. Next, fill a syringe with veneer glue, place the needle tip between the veneer and the body of the furniture and empty the syringe slowly. After it is removed, place a wood block on top of the veneer and wait for the glue to dry; make sure you are following manufacturer recommendations.

When it comes to recovery of your property and possessions from water damage, the SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson team is always here to help you get back to normal. We are experts in the area of restoration from either water damage or fire damage, and we are also mold prevention and remediation experts.

How To Handle A Flood In Your Apartment Complex

5/13/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage from a flood in your apartment complex can make units impossible, and even unsafe, to live in, and can even ruin personal property permanently. No matter the size of the flooding, it can have long-lasting consequences, both to you as the owner and to your residents.

Here are some important tips on how to handle a flood in your apartment complex:

  • Safety. Safety is always the very first consideration in any emergency situation. Even the most minor flooding event can create unsafe conditions, such as washing out walkways or causing deep potholes in the parking areas, so you will want to inspect your grounds thoroughly to identify any unsafe situations that have become an issue. Log these observations and take plenty of pictures and videos, and make sure that your residents are notified to stay clear.
  • Inspections. Visit each affected unit to see what kind of damage there may be. Pay special attention to mold infestations, especially. Wet surfaces are fertile environments for mold, which can further damage the apartment and create substantial health hazards.
  • Responsibilities. You will be responsible to repair the damage up to a point. Be aware of your tenants’ rights, as well, and always do the right thing (It’s good advertising)! Some residents may be under the impression that the owner is liable for the replacement of personal property, for example, and this may not be true in every instance, so knowing the laws will really help here. The principles that support the rights of tenants are pretty much the same in every state, with each state varying in some of the specific details. You or your residents can consult the local housing authority or a tenants’ rights organization if there are any disagreements or if clarification is needed.
  • Rent Payments. If a resident has to leave their unit due to severe water damage, they do not have to pay rent for that particular month or until their apartment is completely repaired. In addition, if the apartment is totally destroyed they can request to cancel their lease if they do not want to move to another unit.
  • Professionals. After you have ensured that the safety of all involved is secured and you know where the repairs need to be made, call in a professional repair company with the expertise and equipment needed to get you back to normal as soon as possible. You are required by law to get these repairs completed in a timely manner and to ensure that units are fit to live in, so make sure you use a company that has a great reputation for thorough and timely completion of all projects.

Here at SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson, we have the experience and skill you need to get your apartment complex back to pre-flood condition as soon as possible! We are water damage, fire damage, and mold remediation experts.

Restoring Your Hardwood Floors After Water Damage

3/17/2020 (Permalink)

The flooring in your home is a key aesthetic element and expense in every home. Hardwood floors are expensive, but beautiful if kept in good condition. Water damage on flooring can be time-consuming and stressful, depending on what type of floors you have. If you suspect you may have any type of water damage in your flooring, it is necessary to immediately start the cleanup process in order to ensure your floors are restored properly and avoid costly damages. Dismissing any kind of water damage could cause mold development, leading to more substantial and damaging effects.

Restoring your flooring.

  1. Wear protective gear. First, ensure that you are taking all the proper precautions for your health and safety. Wear gloves, boots, and a mask to avoid exposure to any possible mold.
  2. Clear the area. Move any furniture and clear the damaged room of objects before inspecting the water damage. Make sure the electricity to that room is cut off in order to take safety precautions and prevent any power surges.
  3. Dry up any visible water. Begin by using a wet/dry vacuum and towels, making sure you absorb any and all water that is only on the external flooring first. This can prevent it from leaking into the subflooring, causing more time-consuming repairs. Afterward, set up fans and dehumidifiers in order to properly dry and ventilate the area. The process of air drying could take anywhere from 7 to 10 days.
  4. Clean any debris. Clean any and all buildup of dirt with detergent and a brush. Continue to do this until all of the flooring is clean and free of debris. Keep the fans and humidifiers running, and rinse the floors with clean water after you have finished.
  5. Refinish the flooring. After the floors have been thoroughly cleaned and dried out, they may still have some cracks and blemishes. This is expected through the process, and the floors can be refinished now that they are restored and clean.

It is important to have the proper knowledge and equipment to thoroughly finish the hardwood flooring restoration process. At SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson, we understand how overwhelming and stressful water damage can be. We specialize in water damage restoration and would be happy to help and take the stress off your shoulders. Reach us at (615) 885-3906 or seek assistance online!

Dealing With Water Damage In Your Attic

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Considering the attic isn’t an area that is used often by homeowners, it’s easy to forget about it. This is the main reason water damage in the attic often goes unnoticed. If water damage isn’t addressed, it can cause more damage to the areas below the attic and potentially cause mold. The signs of water damage usually include water stains, mold, or musty odors in your home. It is important to make sure you take the proper steps to assess the damage as soon as you notice in order to assure your safety and health, and avoid expensive repairs.

In order to address the damage, you must first find the source of the problem. Begin by evaluating the damage. Where is the water coming from? Could it be a burst pipe or a hole in your roof? Make sure to check the roof for leaks on a regular basis. The water damage in your attic can also be caused by a lack of ventilation. Humidity can get trapped in the attic and cause a buildup of condensation, which causes water damage. Be sure to remain safe throughout this process and turn off all electrical items before touching anything.

The next step is to inspect for mold and fix any leaks. As previously mentioned, water damage can lead to a more serious issue, mold, and mildew. Mold can grow in as little as 24 hours, and it’s easy for it to go unnoticed. When inspecting for mold, it is important to take the proper precautions and be careful. Some mold is toxic to humans and if the mold is a serious issue rather than a small one, it’s best to contact a professional. It is also advised to contact a professional before attempting to fix any leaks unless you have to tools and skills to do so with ease.

SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson is always ready to help and assist you with any water damage or mold you may have! If you’re in over your head with water damage, give us a call at (615) 885-3906!

Top Three Places To Check For Water Damage In Your Business

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage within your business can not only cause health risks to your employees but also can lead to costly damages that are time-consuming to fix. In order to avoid the risks and costs of water damage, it is important to stay on top of the potential areas water buildup can develop and inspect your business often. Within a business, there are many areas that are common to be susceptible to water damage and mold. SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson is here to list the top places to check for damages in your business!

  • The roof and ground

After storms and flash flood warnings, it is common that water damage can appear on your business’s property. This damage can affect the foundation of your building, which is an expensive fix. After storms, ensure that you inspect gutters and rain spouts, as well as water pooling on the ground or roof. The pooling of water can lead to a weak foundation or an unsturdy roof.

  • Office equipment

The dishwasher, water heater, and toilets can all be easily susceptible to water damage. All of these pieces of equipment have the potential to leak and cause damage to your business. These appliances need to be regularly maintained in order to avoid damage that may buildup over time.

  • Carpeting or flooring

If you notice a musty smell, you may have mold in your business due to unaddressed water

damage. Rooms within your office that have poor ventilation can be common areas for this mold to develop. Check beneath flooring and carpet and consistently change out the air filters in your business in order to avoid potential health effects and allergies in your employees.

If you suspect water damage or mold in your business, it is best to let a professional handle the problem. A team with the proper equipment, like SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson, can use the correct tools and ensure that the problem is completely addressed and is unlikely to return. You can contact us by requesting assistance online or calling us at (615) 885-3906!

BEWARE of Rust in the Water Heater

8/24/2018 (Permalink)

Know before it is too late, rust in the water heater can cause multiple problems. You may not know, but most water-heater tanks are made of glass-lined steel. If water gets though imperfections in the glass, then you can count on rust and eventually a leak. But because the tank has no inspection ports, it’s hard to tell when it’s dirty or beginning to rust. Tank rust usually isn’t discovered until after a leak occurs- and then it’s too late. You’re not totally without recourse, though.

A special rod call a cathodic anode (or sacrificial anode) is built in to the water-heater tank assembly to prevent rust. As long as the rod is in good condition, deterioration of the tank is drastically reduced.

To prevent damage to the tank, simply replace the cathodic anode, a $15 item that takes about 30 minutes to install. Cathodic anodes are often not readily available in hardware store- you’ll probably have to buy from a plumbing-supply company. Because anodes come in all shapes and sizes, be prepared to give them the make and model of your water heater so that you get the right one. You can find this information on a label on the water-heater housing.

Creativity Saves Money

11/18/2016 (Permalink)

At this flooded office building in Nashville, creativity saved money. Instead of removing large portions of drywall to dry a saturated wall cavity above the ventilation, our crew chief Darren decided to get creative with his drying strategy.

Little Time, Lots of Damage

11/9/2016 (Permalink)

Here is an example of how little time it takes for water to cause A LOT of damage. This home in Nashville, TN was fine when the homeowner left for work at 7:45 in the morning. She came home for lunch to find her ceiling collapsed in three rooms, and a waterfall from upstairs landing in inches of water downstairs. It was the result of a ruptured toilet supply line in an upstairs bathroom. This damage was caused in less than four hours.

Now that it is fall and our temperatures are starting to drop, be mindful of preventative measures to keep your pipes from freezing this winter. Although this particular damage was not caused by a frozen pipe the end result is very similar and just as detrimental.
