What Are Water Damage Categories?

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage to your Hermitage home or business can be the result of many different situations. Storms, burst pipes, fire fighting efforts, or any other number of sources could cause this. There are different classifications of water damage. Some water damage scenarios are small and manageable, while others can be disastrous! Our SERVPRO team is well-equipped to handle water damage events of all classifications. We can be onsite right away to start your water damage restoration process.

What Are The Elements Of Each Water Damage Category?

The 4 Primary Classifications of Water Damage:

  • Class 1 involves the least amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. It affects only part of the material that has absorbed minimal moisture. Little or no wet carpet or cushion is present.
  • Class 2 involves a more significant amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. It affects at least an entire room of carpet and cushion (pad). Water has wicked up walls less than 24 inches. There is moisture remaining in structural materials and substructure soil.
  • Class 3 involves much more significant amounts of water, absorption, and evaporation. This includes saturated ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushion, and subfloor.
  • Class 4 relates to specialty drying. For example, situations involving wet materials with very low permeance/porosity. This includes hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, lightweight concrete, and stone. Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which require very low specific humidity. These types of losses may need longer drying times and unique methods.

What Is The Appropriate Protective Gear For Mold Mitigation?

10/5/2021 (Permalink)

Mold can be potentially hazardous to your health when working in a water-damaged building. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Services, mold thrives in moist conditions with low light levels.

The primary function of personal protective equipment is to limit mold exposure. Actions likely to stir up mold include:

  • Breaking moldy porous materials such as wallboard
  • Using invasive procedures to examine or remediate mold growth in wall cavities
  • Stripping or peeling wallpaper to remove it
  • Using fans to dry items

It's crucial to use the correct personal protective equipment while cleaning up a mold infestation.

What Is The Correct PPE To Use During Mold Mitigation?

Here are the OSHA recommendations for PPE:

  • Use non-vented goggles, long and chemical-resistant gloves for surface cleaning, and disposable protective clothing such as coveralls.
  • Use charcoal-impregnated filters to control odors.
  • For areas smaller than 100 square feet, use at minimum a NIOSH-approved half- or full-face 95-rated N, R, or P respirator.
  • For areas greater than 100 square feet, where mold coverage is heavy, or that generate substantial amounts of dust by cleaning or debris removal, use at minimum a NIOSH-approved half- or full-face 100-rated N, R, or P respirator.
  • Disposable clothing is recommended for medium and large remediation projects. It prevents the transfer and spread of mold to clothing and eliminates skin contact with mold. When limited protection is warranted, disposable paper coveralls can be used.

What Are The Do's and Don'ts When Handling Fire and Smoke Damage?

8/25/2021 (Permalink)

Fire is a devastating experience for both home and business owners; it is difficult to overcome and repair and can be risky for you to handle when unsure how to handle the damage left behind. There are simple things you can do on your own, however.

  • Cleaning smoke and fire damage involves some health and safety precautions, so before getting started, call the fire marshal to know whether it is safe to enter your home.
  • Be sure to open doors and windows whenever possible to allow air to circulate when performing a fire and smoke cleaning project. Toxic fumes and chemical compounds from burnt objects can be very harmful. Wear proper gear and clothing, including gloves and masks.
  • You can get some more tips on what you can do to recover from fire and smoke damage HERE

Do's For Fire And Smoke Damage Restoration

Your checklist for what to do after the fire should contain specific non-negotiable tasks, including:

  • DO contact a certified restoration specialist: Make sure you immediately schedule an accredited fire and smoke restoration professional for remediation services.
  • DO turn off utilities: Turn off water, electricity, gas, and any other utilities until a professional can evaluate whether these were affected.
  • DO vacuum: You can enhance the professional's chances of success by doing the first pass on your own. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment and go over your upholstered furniture.
  • DO address your carpets, floors, and countertops: Vacuum carpets to help prevent soot from grinding deeper into the textile. Countertops and hardwood floors should be wiped clean to prevent the soot from staining and clinging to the surfaces.
  • DO check your appliances: Your utilities should be off. Be sure to empty your freezer and refrigerator and leave the doors open to prevent mold and mildew. Likewise, winterize your plumbing and drain your hot-water heater and boiler. During the fire damage restoration process, fluids can freeze and cause burst pipes and other damage in the absence of heat.
  • DO take care of pets: Remove pets from your fire-damaged home. Lingering soot and smoke can be harmful to them.

Don'ts For Fire And Smoke Damage Restoration

Your checklist should also include several things to avoid at all times, as well, including:

  • DON'T use your AC, heater, or electronics: Wait until a professional arrives on the scene — same with electronics like the television, computers, and DVD players. Turning on electronics can create more significant damage.
  • DON'T clean walls or clothing: Do not clean walls, ceilings, or similar surfaces, and wait to clean your clothing and similar garments. A professional should examine them first and provide advice.
  • DON'T eat leftover food: Never eat anything that was in the home during the fire. Due to smoke, soot, or contaminants introduced to the environment, food left behind is probably not safe to consume.
  • DON'T wipe away powder from extinguishers: Forgo trying to clean up any staining from the powder discharged by a fire extinguisher. It is best to let professionals guide the cleanup of these areas.

When in doubt, wait for the professionals. Upholstery, carpets, and counters are fine to begin cleaning yourself, but let your professional fire restoration company manage the rest. Remember, never re-enter a home until cleared by the fire department or other local officials.

Whenever you experience a disaster of any kind, SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson is here to help!. In addition to fire damage and smoke damage, we also handle mold remediation, odor removal, and more.

How Do I Prepare My Hermitage/Donelson Property For A Storm?

8/25/2021 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson, we always advise homeowners and business owners to prepare their properties for the coming winter storm season. It’s wise to be proactive. Extreme weather can lead to power outages, communications disruption, and personal and business property damage. It is not uncommon for snow and ice to occur in our area, and floods are not unusual, either. It’s essential to be prepared for many different severe weather situations during winter here in Middle Tennessee.

What Are Some Important Tips To Help Me Prepare My Hermitage/Donelson Property For Bad Weather?

  • Windows and doors need to be inspected and appropriately sealed or replaced before storms, and other winter weather conditions occur. You will save on related energy costs and enjoy more excellent safety if you replace old windows and doors with newer, more efficient models.
  • Before storm season comes to the Hermitage/Donelson area, make sure all dead or unhealthy trees and bushes are trimmed back or removed from your yard. Prune branches that are not stable, and clean up debris that may be cluttering up your premises. Hazardous trees, tree branches, and loose debris can cause significant damage to your property during high winds and ice storms.
  • When rain falls, or snow melts, the water needs to be able to flow down your rain gutters and away from your roofing. If there is dirt and debris left in your gutters from last spring, the water will pool and begin to back up, possibly damaging the interior walls of your building. Damp within the walls can even lead to mold growth, causing a need for mold remediation in addition to managing the storm damage. A rain gutter full of dirt can also become heavy and pull away from the building, creating another set of issues.

How Can SERVPRO Help Me Get My Hermitage/Donelson Property Ready For The Winter Storm Season?

SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donselson cares about your safety and wellbeing, and keeping your property in good condition is part of that. We can come and assess your property’s’storm-readiness ahead of seasonal bad weather and make recommendations to help you keep your home or business damage-free. Can SERVPRO Of Hermitage/Donelson Dry My Documents?

8/23/2021 (Permalink)

We often store vital information in a digital format today, where they are quickly recovered in the event of a disaster. What about documents that haven’t yet been digitized? If these become water-damaged, you are likely to lose them. Fortunately, SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson employs a drying process that can recover your damaged paper goods; we use the same technique that the Library of Congress uses to dry water-damaged books!

What Is The Process SERVPRO Uses To Recover My Damaged Paper Goods?

Freezing Your Documents

  • SERVPRO uses vacuum freeze-drying to achieve sublimation, a process where the moisture in an object is frozen and dried by being converted directly into gas using various vacuums and pressures. This process avoids additional damage that water would create. Our priority will be to freeze and stabilize the damaged documents. The documents are stored in a frozen state until they can be appropriately shipped to SERVPRO’s corporate headquarters. We work closely with corporate to make sure everything possible is done to preserve your paper assets.

Undergoing the Drying Process

  • Once your documents arrive at SERVPRO’s headquarters, they are transferred to our state-of-the-art Drying Chamber Facility. The HIPAA Master-certified staff will carefully move the items to the chamber where they undergo the above-mentioned process. The building is secured and monitored 24/7, so you can rest assured your items are safe. Drying time is typically 7 to 10 days, depending on the amount of moisture and backlog involved. Staff is available around the clock to offer updates and answer questions.

Are There Other SERVPRO Services Besides Drying That I Can Request?

Beyond Document Restoration

SERVPRO offers more than just a top-of-the-line drying process. In addition to drying the water-damaged documents, the Document Restoration Team provides the following services upon request:

Does SERVPRO Of Hermitage/Donelson Have The Right Tools To Help?

8/16/2021 (Permalink)

No matter what challenges you may be facing, SERVPRO has all of the right tools and equipment to get you back to normal as quickly as possible. We have what it takes to manage damage from both fire and flooding, the after-effects of an accident, or the issues accompanying a biohazard.

What Specialized Tools Are Used By SERVPRO?

For example, here are just a few examples of the specialized equipment we use to remediate water damage.

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment.

Scientific drying principles rely upon specialized equipment to detect, measure and monitor a property’s moisture levels. Recent advances, like infrared cameras, can help us see the water through a wall, ceiling, or floor.

  • An infrared camera is used to identify water location for thorough water removal.
  • Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation.

Water Extraction Equipment.

Powerful extraction equipment speeds the drying process by removing the bulk of the water from your home or business.

  • We use submersible and gas-powered pumps for the continuous pumping of high-level water.
  • Truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.

Drying Equipment.

Industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers are needed to remove the remaining moisture from your home or business’s ceilings, walls, and floors of your home or business. Proper drying helps to prevent swelling and warping of floors, walls, and furniture.

  • High-speed air movers cause moisture to evaporate at a faster pace
  • Industrial grade dehumidifiers pull the water vapor from the air.

Odor Removal and Deodorization.

Water and fire damage often causes powerful odors. Our machines remove airborne contaminants and control the air quality during the restoration and cleanup process.

  • Air scrubbers
  • Thermal foggers and deodorization agents

Sanitizing Agents, Germicides, and Antimicrobial Treatments.

An OSHA-approved cleaning agent may be required to clean and remove odors and contaminants on your property.

  • Deodorization products control odors from excessive moisture.
  • Disinfection products stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, mildew, and other harmful microorganisms.

How Can SERVPRO Help During Flash Flood Warnings In Hermitage/Donelson?

8/9/2021 (Permalink)

According to Weather.gov, many things can cause flash floods, but in most cases, they are due to heavy rainfall from thunderstorms. The intensity of the rain, the location and distribution of the precipitation, land use and topography, vegetation types and growth/density, soil type, and the water content of the soil itself all determine just how quickly the flash flooding may occur.

Where/When Are Flash Floods Most Likely To Occur In Hermitage/Donelson?

Flash floods most likely to occur:

  • When a dam or levee breaks
  • When significant amounts of water are released upstream (such as what happened during the Nashville Flood of 2005)
  • During mudslides (debris flow)
  • When there is heavy rainfall in a metropolitan area, the impervious surfaces in urban areas do not allow water to infiltrate the ground, so water runs off to low spots quickly.

How Can SERVPRO Of Hermitage/Donelson Help After A Flood?

Our highly-trained team here at SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson can be onsite right away to help you deal with the aftermath of flooding. We will

  • Assess your property for safety hazards and remediate any issues

Can A Fire Ruin The Foundation Of My Nashville Home?

7/26/2021 (Permalink)

The core materials of concrete used to construct the foundation of a home, such as cement and aggregates, combine to form an inert material, so the foundation of your Nashville home will not burn. Concrete cannot be set on fire like other building materials. Its slow rate of heat transfer also means that the concrete of your home foundation will act as an effective fire barrier.

However, fire CAN damage your foundation.

WHAT ARE THE WAYS FIRE CAN HARM THE FOUNDATION OF MY NASHVILLE HOUSE?

When a fire exposes foundation concrete to high heat:

  • Extensive damage can occur due to the temperature shock to the material. Concrete expands as it’s heated, so if extreme heat is applied, the outer layers expand more quickly than the inner layers. The layers will separate from each other, eventually breaking away.
  • When hose streams or automatic sprinkler systems douse a fire, the hot concrete cools suddenly, and the outer layer may shrink at a different rate and break away.
  • When extreme heat penetrates concrete enough to weaken the steel reinforcement components within the concrete, the structural integrity of the entire structure could be negatively affected.

HOW CAN I PREVENT FIRE DAMAGE TO THE FOUNDATION OF MY NASHVILLE HOME?

Practicing fire safety will protect your Nashville house from fire damage, keeping everyone safe. Some critical fire safety tips for homeowners to follow are:

  • Maintain fire alarms properly
  • Use caution with open flames
  • Cook safely, using proper kitchen tools
  • Establish a fire escape route
  • Heat your home safely
  • Use electricity in a safe manner
  • Protect yourself first in case of fire

The SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson team of experienced technicians can be onsite right away to help you recover from fire damage. We are experts in managing the recovery of homes, businesses, personal belongings, and any other items that have been affected by a fire.

What Is A Proper Commercial Fire Sprinkler System For My Nashville Business

7/19/2021 (Permalink)

There is a lot to consider when you are in the process of deciding which commercial fire sprinkler system is best for your Nashville business location. Of course, the type of business you have will be a primary factor in determining the proper fit. Keeping both your operation and your employees safe is vital, of course, since a fire can be debilitating, dangerous, and costly.

WHAT FACTORS SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING THE RIGHT FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM FOR MY NASHVILLE ORGANIZATION?

There are various sprinkler system types on the market, and the options available vary depending on the environment that the system will be covering. You will want to think about:

  • the size of your building(s)
  • the cost of the system itself
  • building restrictions and fire codes
  • the type of operation you run and its specific fire hazards
  • your protection preferences as the owner

WHAT TYPES OF COMMERCIAL FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS ARE THERE TO CHOOSE FROM FOR MY NASHVILLE BUSINESS?

  • WET SYSTEMS:
    • Attach to a piping system that constantly fills
    • Will automatically dispenses water when a fire is detected
    • Designed for environments that maintain a consistent temperature above 40 degrees Fahrenheit
    • Not ideal for protecting sensitive equipment
    • Most recommended commercial fire sprinkler system
  • DRY SYSTEMS:
    • Filled with pressurized nitrogen or air rather than water
    • Release air that permits the water pressure to open the dry pipe valve, causing the water to flow into the piping system and out of the sprinkler heads
    • Designed for areas where freezing temperatures (below 40 degrees Fahrenheit) can be expected
    • Most commonly installed in attics, loading docks, commercial freezers, etc.
  • PRE-ACTION SYSTEMS:
    • Contain an electronically-operated valve that controls the water that goes into the piping system
    • Similar to a dry system, except the sprinklers are closed
    • Will not release water until heat activates the operating element in each sprinkler
    • Typically seen in facilities that house high-value equipment, such as hospitals, computer rooms, art museums, etc.
  • DELUGE SYSTEMS:
    • Installed in the same areas as sprinklers but only opened by the operation of a detection system
    • First ensures the valve is opened, and water is then released in all attached sprinklers
    • Most commonly used where large quantities of water are required to control a fire quickly
    • Found in power plants, aircraft hangers, chemical storage, processing facilities, etc.

SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson is here to help you get your Nashville commercial business fire safety systems in place. We can evaluate your premises and make recommendations specific to your location. Then, if your business suffers from fire damage, we can be onsite right away to begin the restoration process, saving you both time and money.
