Crime Scene Cleanup

7/3/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson has excellent and professional crews that can handle any bio-cleanup that you may need.

These services include cleaning bodily fluids, blood, and ruined product.

Say for instance, you get home one day and while you were gone, someone broke into your home through a window and cut themselves on the way in. After everything is taken care of and a police report is filed, someone needs to clean up the blood. Cleaning blood out of the carpet requires strong cleaners that SERVPRO has developed special for those kinds of jobs.

Another example of a bio-job is, let's say that you have taken on the responsibility of babysitting for your neighbor. While the kids were playing, one ate too much at lunch and has now gotten sick all over the living room floor. Sure you can attempt to clean, but SERVPRO cleaners take the stain AND smell out completely.

We have bio-jobs listed and sometimes what those entail can be confusing. Please consider us to take care of a messy situation and make it "Like it never even happened."

Fire Damage DOs and DON'Ts

Emergency Fire Damage Tips

DO

  • Keep hands clean
  • Limit movement in the home to prevent further damage.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on carpeted traffic areas to prevent more soiling.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
  • Wipe soot from chrome on faucets and appliances then protect with a light coating of lubricant.

DON'T

  • Do not attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting a SERVPRO Franchise Professional.
  • Do not attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting a SERVPRO Franchise Professional.
  • Do not attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire or water without consulting a repair service.

It may seem easier to try and take care of fire damage on your own, but more often than not, trying to clean with generic products only ruins the damaged area more. Call SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson and we'll be there to help!

Tips for Surviving Summer

6/19/2018 (Permalink)

The First Day of Summer Is Approaching!!

SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson pulled together some of our best known tips and home remedies for common summer problems!

Sunburns

We all know that the best part about summer is that we get to cool off with a nice dip in the pool! Depending on how long that dip takes, you could be in for some sun damage. Here are a few ways that we have found works best for treating sunburns:

  • ALOE gel/lotion - During the summer aloe is your best friend. It takes the heat out fast and minimizes your peeling. If you only have a little sunburn the best to use is the gel. If you are severely burned, the best advice to give is to use the aloe lotion. It is so much more gentle when it comes to a burn that is very painful.
  • Hot Tub/Hot Shower - This is by far the most painful way to deal with a sunburn, but it works the very best. After you've been in the sun for as long as you can stand, dip in the hot tub for 15 minutes. Make sure that your sun-exposed skin is completely submerged. It hurts initially. but the recovery time is cut down by at least 50%. It pulls heat out and keeps it out. It also helps to follow up with an aloe treatment.

Mosquito Bites

During the summer, we tend to spend a lot of time outside, especially at night when the weather is more enjoyable. Unfortunately, that's when the pesky little insects like to come out and play. When treating a mosquito bite, here are a few topical solutions to try:

  • Honey
  • Green Tea
  • Ice
  • Lemon
  • Aloe
  • Cucumber

Those few things are to decrease the swelling and itching of a mosquito bite. This may sound crazy, but the most effective way to get rid of an itch is simple. Take your fingernail and press into the center of the bite and make an "x". This works like magic and we wish we could tell you why, but that, my friend, is a mystery.

And last, but not least:

Bee Stings

We try and avoid these little guys, but they love the sun as much as we do. Here are a few things that help with the stinging and swelling of a bee bite (assuming that you are not allergic to them):

  • Basil - This is mainly to help with the swelling after the stinging goes away. The best way to use basil is to mix with water in a food processor so that all of the good nutrients in the basil come to surface.
  • Water & Baking Soda Solution - mix these to form a paste; apply and let dry before taking it off. This helps with the sting.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar - apply straight, not mixed with anything. Organic, with mother works best. This helps with the sting.
  • Raw Honey - plain and simple. Apply topically, this helps with sting.

We hope that you all have a wonderful summer and that these tips help!

A Skating Good Time

6/15/2018 (Permalink)

Community A Skating Good Time Owner, Bob Jacobs, and Marketing Rep, Jordan Sanders having their new books signed by Scott Hamilton.

Olympic Gold Medalist and retired American figure skater, Scott Hamilton, was the must-see person at the Donelson Hermitage Chamber of Commerce Luncheon this month! Having spent time talking one-on-one with him, we can vouch that he is a very genuine and down-to-Earth person who cares a lot about the people that he comes into contact with.

In his address to the members of the Chamber, he talked about his battle with testicular cancer, his experience with his brain tumor and the steps that he has made to help the people that are affected by cancer.

He has a foundation called CARES and that stands for Cancer Alliance for Research, Education, and Survivorship. The main purpose of this foundation is to create different, less harmful ways to treat cancer patients including Immunotherapy and Proton Therapy which you can learn more about on his website.

He also started the 4th Angel Program. After recovering himself, he identified his three angels through his battle. The first angel: his oncology physician. The second angel: his oncology nurse. The third angel: his family and his friends. He said what he needed was a fourth angel: someone who had "been there, done that". This program is set up to pair someone that is going through their journey with cancer and match them up with someone who is close in age and had a similar cancer experience. This gives the patient someone that he/she can relate to and maintain that one-on-one relationship with to help them through a very difficult time.

SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson cares a great deal about the steps that Mr. Hamilton has made in the cancer field, because we, much like millions of others, know first-hand how cancer can affect the ones that you love and care about.

His website also includes a link in case there is any desire to donate to the CARES program to further the production of cancer killing treatments.

Sun's Out, Grill's Out

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

As the summer season is quickly approaching us here in Nashville, SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson wanted to remind everyone to exercise fire safety around your home. We all know that the first official sign of the summer season is when Dad decides to pull out his handy, dandy grilling apron. When using an open flame, the U.S. Fire Administration says that you should keep your grill at least 3 feet away from any structures. This ensures that the mixture of out-of-control flames and wind cannot reach your home, garage, or any other building that you may have in your backyard. Always be aware of other surrounding while you are grilling. Keep an eye out for children, pets, and small flammable objects to be sure that they stay away from the flames. When you practice the appropriate fire safety techniques, the only thing you have to worry about is keeping stains off of your lucky apron! We wish everyone a great summer and happy grilling!

GNAA Trade Show 2017

8/11/2017 (Permalink)

We were thrilled to be a part of another great trade show with the Greater Nashville Apartment Association. We even got our owner, Bob Jacobs, out in some spirited clothing. The theme was "Red, White, and Blue." As you can see by the photo, we take our themes seriously, but still want to be ready for whatever happens. Like a modern day Clark Kent, Bob could easily rid himself of his red, white and blue disguise to respond to a property related emergency.

We love any opportunity to get out for a night of fun with friends, customers, and industry partners. Even if it means we are wearing weird suspenders! See you next year at the GNAA Trade Show.

We Stand With The Nashville Predators

6/6/2017 (Permalink)

As the rest of the country seems to have fallen in love with our likable underdogs, we decided it was fitting to formally announce that SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson stands with the Nashville Predators. Their historic run for the Stanley Cup has not only brought much deserved attention to Nashville's hockey team, but it has also solidified Nashville as one of the greatest sports atmospheres in the country. We are proud to say that our office is just a short two and a half miles away from Bridgestone Arena, the home of the Predators. As you are cheering on the Preds in these Stanley Cup Finals, remember as the Predators are cleaning up around the net, SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson is here to clean up around your home after your celebrations.

Fire Damage Didn't 'Soot' These Walls

Fire Damage Fire Damage Didn't 'Soot' These Walls Production Manager Mike Knight test cleaning an area of damaged wall.

Get it? Here at SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson, we enjoy terrible puns almost as much as we enjoy serving our community.

Following a damaging fire, all of the concrete block walls in this apartment were covered in a thick layer of black soot. We don't feel soot and fire damage suits any dwelling, so we decided to remove it.

In this photo, you can see the stark difference between the cleaned area and the remaining affected areas. With the right chemicals, meticulous cleaning methods, and a little bit of elbow grease, we were able to get this seemingly destroyed structure back to habitable conditions within just a few days.

Mold Cleanup in Nashville

1/6/2017 (Permalink)

This relatively new construction in a Nashville suburb essentially had its own ecosystem beneath the house. This was caused by a crawlspace that was improperly ventilated. This image shows what the damage looked like prior to remediation. Check out our section of before and after photos to see how it looked at SERVPRO of Hermitage/Donelson was finished. This crawlspace required a drying treatment, followed by an extensive remediation. After that, we replaced the vapor barrier and fully encapsulated the crawlspace. This prevents outside moisture, or ground moisture, from building up and creating a problem like the one in this image.
